It is no secret to readers of this blog that I love my high heels. Platforms and wedges make up 95% of my shoe collection. The only flat shoes that I own are one pair of flip flops to wear home from my pedicure, and a couple pair of Nike’s which I rotate for my workouts. Even my slippers have 2 or 3 inch heels. I confess that it is so I can reach the coffee cups in my cupboard for my morning coffee. Actually, I just look better in heels. Ballet flats are adorable….on other people.

I have had many jobs where I was on my feet all day. The worst was when I worked at BCBG and we had to wear the look of the collections which meant wearing high often pointed toe heels. I believe that was when I realized that I needed two pair of shoes for every outfit. Also, it was when “you can’t have too many black shoes” became my motto. If you are foolish inclined to adopt this philosophy, then I have some tricks to share with you. First of all it really does help to rotate your shoes or to switch shoes a couple of times a day even if they are still high. The most useful item I have found are the gel inserts that are meant for heels. They somehow redistribute your weight so that it is not all on the balls of your feet. Dr. Scholl’s makes them but there are other generic brands that are just as good and they average around $10 per pair. You can move them from one pair of shoes to another but the sticky underside stays better when left in one pair.

I have tried to make a practice of NOT wearing heels throughout the day when I am home. For one thing I am more productive and my feet and calves get exercised in a way that makes the hours in heels more tolerable. I do however believe in setting my sights higher and so I am ever so happy to view the world from a taller perspective.
