Today is root touch up day and even though I have decided to grow my very short hair just a little longer, I have reached the point where it is neither here nor there and it needs to be shaped too. It is a painful process to grow out hair but I’m only talking about a few inches. I must admit though short hair is liberating, sassy and versatile and always feels chic so I will probably keep it cropped for now. Its only hair……but what a difference a style change can make! I have had about every hairstyle imaginable and have been a brunette, blonde, and redhead. My age and my desire to wear harmonizing colors has prevented me from going to pinks, blues, purples and greens but I admire the bravery of those who can rock that look. Changing your hairstyle is a quick way to get a different perspective when your look feels stale and your closet underwhelms you. Trust me. I know.

I was amused by Lady Gaga’s song “I’m As Free As My Hair” and her quote “Without my wigs I can’t be who I wanna be. I feel like I can be only one person and I wanna be so many.” Getting extensions or wearing wigs are great options that can beat the boredom while making a style transition. They can be a great way to try out a new look without committing to it. Sherry Shepherd of The View dons a different wig every day. When I was in high school (in the 70’s) synthetic stretch wigs were all the rage. I had very long hair and so of course I had a short shag wig. I used to borrow my sister’s bobbed wig with bangs too. Every time my hairstyle or color changed, it changed the way I looked in my clothes too. Unfortunately, all of the bobby pins it took to tuck my long hair into the wigs gave me a headache and the wigs were very warm. I’m sure the natural hair wigs are much better but for now I will enjoy my short hair and leave the wig-wearing to Lady Gaga and Sherry Shepherd. However it is nice to know that there are options when growing my hair has me “wigged out”.
