Years ago when I taught aerobics in my little studio, I noticed an interesting dynamic when newcomers would arrive to class. In the beginning, they would wear sweats or baggy t-shirts and fight to position themselves in the back row, as far away from the mirror as they could get. As time wore on they would get bumped to the next row as other newcomers would vie for their spots in the back of the room. Little by little the sweats were replaced with leggings and t-shirts were replaced with tank tops. A new confidence started to emerge from the women as they made progress in their workouts and their proximity to the mirror changed. Eventually one or two of them would end up in the front row. Suddenly the workout clothes were stylish and colorful. A new energy and pride was injected into the workouts. Working out became more than just the drudgery of never ending routines. They would watch themselves and notice new definition in muscles that were no longer hiding beneath their sweats. If you are a visual person who is stimulated by color and movement, perhaps a little oomph in your workout wear will add a little incentive to get moving. Fashion and fitness are not necessarily exclusive of one another. If you feel good in your clothing, maybe you will enjoy your workouts just a little more.
