I am old enough to remember the terms mini, midi, and maxi so I was surprised to see the word “maxi” resurface in fashion vocabulary albeit with a fresh face. Simply put, a maxi is a long dress, usually at least to the ankles. What differentiates it from a gown is how and where it is worn. The modern maxi comes in a variety of styles, colors and prints and is a popular fashion element once again. On a warm day, a maxi can be worn to the beach over a swimsuit then slip into a pair of espadrilles or gladiators, a large brimmed hat, and some cool shades and off to lunch you go. Where a gown is for more elegant events and typically evening, a maxi is for fun and comfort, day or night. I have seen a variety of maxis which are often embellished at the neckline with beads and crystals. Pucci-esque prints are everywhere and graphics have displayed an array of colorful patterns that add to the playful and not so serious look of the maxi. You will usually find maxis in light weight fabrics or knits which make them a hit on a hot summer day. Large bangles and watches are a fun way to complete the look and to avoid looking as if you are wearing a muumuu.

If you are a small person, it is best to keep to a slimmer silhouette for a vertical look and to avoid looking overwhelmed by too much fabric. A halter style, empire waist or defined waist with a narrow skirt will be most flattering and a wedge or espadrille will give you that extra boost. That doesn’t mean you have to wear small prints. Save the calico for quilting. Bold colors and prints are what the summer maxis are all about.

For the larger woman, avoid spaghetti straps and go for more fabric near the shoulder. Be careful with the stripes as there are many bold, high contrast striped patterns out there which if not placed right can add girth. Be careful not to “hide” your body by wearing a maxi that is too full as it will also make you look larger. A tall woman can get away with a great pair of gladiators or even flip flops to complete the casual but cool look.

Save the pumps, the peeptoes, the silks and satins for the gowns and special occasions. Rock the maxi for a spirited summer day or evening and go with the flow.
