Well, here we go again! It wouldn’t be fashion if it weren’t fickle and hemlines are as uncommitted as ever for spring/summer 2011. Last year was a strange mixture of the very short or the very long maxi. Should it be any surprise that this year’s hemlines will fall somewhere in between? Many of the looks for spring, from Calvin Klein to Chloe featured skirts which fell between right below the knee and just above the ankle. I don’t know whether to jump for joy or cry. Like anything else, there is so much to consider when choosing whether or not to embrace a new silhouette. When styles change drastically, I find myself thumbing through magazines and websites over and over again, drinking in the new look and reinterpreting it to fit my reality….and my body. Some designers featured flowing layers of pleated fabrics and some featured straight, stiff column-like skirts. It will take some time to figure out if and how I want to move in this direction. Something tells me that I will figure out a way to scale it down for my petite figure and when I do I will share my tricks short of adding fabric to my shorter skirts! I suppose I should look on the bright side…..I will have to consider expanding my shoe wardrobe to accommodate the new lengths. (see The Gender Justifies the Shoes in the archives).
