It is obvious from the spring 2011 fashion shows that color is big for spring. There has been a lot of talk about “color blocking” which is simply wearing two or more solid colors together. It can be fun and is certainly a wake-up call after a snowy winter in New England. But there are a few pointers to make this look work.

First of all, choose colors with the same intensity. If you like brights, wear all brights. Don’t mix a block of pastels with brights or vice-versa. Wear a maximum of three colors to avoid looking like a circus act. Choose complementary colors. They are directly opposite on the color wheel. Speaking of the color wheel, you may also try choosing colors from triads or those colors which form a perfect triangle on the color wheel. Do keep your accessories neutral.

Be careful of proportion. Try not to cut yourself into too many pieces. Personally, I love color but this look is not for me. I much prefer a more monochromatic look whether I incorporate darks, brights, or neutrals. It is difficult to look sophisticated in so many colors. If you are a little unsure about color blocking, start small with swim wear or workout wear, where you can play with the look without a large investment.
