I was flipping through this month’s InStyle magazine and came across a page with paper dolls. A shiver of familiarity went through me and I experienced a strong deja vu. When I was a little girl, I used to sift through the pages of McCall’s magazine to find Betsy McCall. I would anxiously cut out the clothes, being careful to cut around the tabs that would hold them on Betsy. I was fascinated with paper dolls. I learned to draw a human figure when I was 8 or less and soon entertained myself by drawing my own paper dolls. I designed closets full of clothes for them. Consequently, when I was going to school for fashion design, rendering my designs was the most entertaining and familiar part to me. I just had to remember not to draw tabs on my designs! Little did I know the influence that Betsy McCall’s paper dolls would have on me one day.
