I am not promoting beer as a health and wellness product but I thought I would “enlighten” you as to the calorie and carb contents of some of the most popular. After all, it is summer and sometimes a swig on a nice cold beer is incomparable to anything else. I was always more of a red wine drinker until I took up skiing a few years ago. I must admit that on what we would call a zero calorie day of hard skiing, there was nothing like beer and nachos. Besides, red wine can make you sleepy and forgetful of the great conversations you were having while imbibing. Hmmm…

Here are some basics about a few of the top light beers and a few tasters opinions:

1. Amstel Light 95 cal/5.0 g. carbs thick, smooth, tangy

2. Beck’s Light 64cal/ 3.9 g. carbs like straight out of a fraternity keg

3. Bud Select 99cal/ 3.1 g. carbs a little watered down

4. Coors Light 102cal/ 5.0 g. carbs tastes like flat Bud Light

5. Corona Light 99cal/ 5.0 g. carbs not bad, persistent after taste (hence the lime???)

6. Heineken Light 99cal/ 6.8 g. carbs mixed reviews

7. Miller Chill 110cal/ 6.5 g. carbs zippy “beach” beer

8. Miller Lite 96cal/ 3.2 g. carbs nasty! avoid at all costs

9. O’Doul’s 65cal/ 13.3 g. carbs no alcohol, no buzz, no hangover, but what about the carbs???

10. Sam Adams Light 119cal/ 9.6 g. carbs crisp, hearty, bitter

While I was visiting Iowa last week, I was offered MGD 64 and Bud Select 55 when they did not have my requested Beck’s Light. I would have to say… “forget” it and go for the red wine.
