Try saying that quickly ten times in a row! The Cannes Film Festival is in progress this week and it is a star studded event as usual. I decided to feature a Chinese actress today in her dress that she wore to the opening ceremonies. If you haven’t heard of Fan BingBing, she is most recently noted for her roles in the movies Shaolin and Bermuda Mountain and is ranked 9th in the China Celebrity 100. According to thinkingchinese. com, she is known for her white skin, large eyes, pointed chin, and notable nose; beauty standards that are becoming more popular in China in recent years.

Now, back to that dress. It got very mixed reviews. It is heavily embroidered and she wore Cartier jewels and carried a pearl clutch. Some thought it was gaudy and over the top. As I scanned Google images for red carpet gowns at the event, I must say it got my attention! I thought it was stunning in contrast to her black hair and porcelain skin. Although it looked a bit heavy with all of that embroidery, there was something very authentic about the look which was designed by her stylist, Chris Bu Kewen. The dramatic interpretation hinted at old world Chinese but it was anything but traditional. The rather demure front bow gave way to a dramatic finish with a billowing trail. I would have loved to see it in a lighter weight silk, with just a little more movement but it was still a stand out.

Not ending for a few days, it will be fun to see what looks were the best and which will be in the “cannes”.
